Just like any writing surface, your chalkboard can take a beating over time. By cleaning your board on a regular basis, however, you can help to ensure that it lasts you well into the future and looks its best at all times. Whenever cleaning your chalkboard, you need to be careful which techniques you use, as the wrong ones could just damage the board beyond repair.
Take a clean cloth and add 2 or 3 drops of lemon juice to the material. Put the cloth in a zip-lock bag, leave overnight and then use on your chalkboard. This should entirely clean the surface without leaving any streaks or stains.
Fill a bucket with warm water and add in half a cup of vinegar. Use a window squeegee to wash the chalkboard down.
Spray a cloth with a dusting and cleaning spray that has been specifically created for chalkboards. This will remove all of the chalk residue from the board without leaving streaks.
Go to a teaching supply store (or similar establishment) and purchase a specialised chalkboard cleaning cloth – these actually eliminate the need to use soap and water to clean the board and can last you up to a year.
When cleaning your chalkboard, ensure that you start in the top left hand corner and work your way across in an up and down motion all the way to the top right hand corner. You can also keep your chalkboard erasers clean by clapping them out daily (or by getting your kids to do it!). By carefully looking after and maintaining your chalkboard, you can ensure that it lasts close to a lifetime.
